Ray Steels

My friend Matt has recently started his own company called Ray Steels and I did some promo shots with him last week. He is making beautiful leather aprons that are aimed at tattooers, barbers and baristas and feature custom lining. The aprons are soft and really comfortable, and pretty damn sexy too! Check them out at www.facebook/raysteelsfam

Urban Myths Exhibition Westfield

URBAN MYTHS: Tales of Two Cities
Photographers Bring New Focus to the Intricacies of the Australian Urban Tapestry

The debut public art exhibition of an ongoing partnership between Westfield Sydney’s and aMBUSH Gallery, URBAN MYTHS: Tales of Two Cities is a photography exhibition comprising the compelling work of Nicole Reed (Melbourne) and Tristan Stefan-Edouard (Sydney).

Launching on Thursday 15 November and continuing until 4 January at the Urban Precinct of Westfield Sydney, URBAN MYTHS chronicles the moments and motifs that, through the lenses of two influential contemporary photographers, best describe the characters of their respective home cities. From soaring city skylines to the nuances of the cities’ quiet corners, the photographs shed new light on the familiar, and open doors to scenes otherwise unobserved.

The exhibition is an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore Sydney and Melbourne from two unique perspectives, and in this way URBAN MYTHS promotes a sense of inclusiveness that is important to the exhibition’s curator, Bill Dimas of aMBUSH Gallery. He explains that, by incorporating this project into the Gallery’s partnership with Westfield Sydeny, both the artists and the centre stand to recruit new facets to their audiences, and that such collaborations are vital to the sustainability of the arts.

In addition to the photographic exhibition, URBAN MYTHS will feature a live painting event on Saturday 17 November. In keeping with the project’s theme, Adnate (Melbourne) and Sprinkles (Sydney) will paint side by side from 12 - 4 pm on site at Westfield. As diverse in style as they are in origin, Adnate and Sprinkles will bring the age old Melbourne versus Sydney rivalry to the canvas as they represent their cities, brushes in hand.

An insightful and affectionate exploration of two of Australia’s most influential metropolises, URBAN MYTHS: Tales of Two Cities zooms in on the cultural tapestries that more than eight million people call home, and shows them framed by the masterful eyes of accomplished photographers Nicole Reed and Tristan Stefan-Edouard.

Folio photos for tattooers

Being the photo editor for a tattoo magazine I experience the frustration of so many artists these days sending in photos from their iphones. So often I get amazing tattoos and artwork sent to me, but the photos are just so bad they cannot be used. Iphone photos look great on an iphone, even OK on the web, but they do not translate to print very well.
Occasionally I am hired by tattooers to take their folio shots for them. Here are a  couple of examples I did for tattooer Rhys Gordon. It's well worth getting your artwork properly photographed, or investing in a good camera yourself because one day, a print magazine might want to do an article on you!
(all below tattoos by Rhys Gordon except top one on Rhys Gordon by Trevor McStay)

Winner of the Desktop Create Award for Photography

Recently I accepted the award for the photography section of the Desktop Create Awards. My entry was the editorial photography I did for the New York Issue of T-world journal.
Shooting this project was an incredible experience and a huge thankyou must go to Eddie Zammit from T-world for not only hiring me to take the photos, but for being one of my strongest influences and inspirations.
